Treating Under Eye Dark circles & skin Elasticity
Brightening and Rejuvenating Your Under Eye Area
The delicate skin around our eyes is often the first place to show signs of ageing, fatigue, or volume changes. If you've been struggling with dark circles, hollowing, or crepey skin under your eyes, you're certainly not alone. These are some of the most common concerns I see in clinic, particularly after weight loss when facial volume shifts can leave the periorbital area looking tired or aged.

What Causes Under Eye Dark Circles and Loss of Elasticity?
The under eye area is uniquely vulnerable.
The skin here is incredibly thin—about 0.5mm compared to 2mm on the rest of your face—which means blood vessels and pigmentation show through more readily.
Dark circles typically result from a combination of factors: genetic pigmentation, visible vascularity, hollowing that creates shadows, and loss of skin quality over time.
Elasticity loss happens as we age and our natural collagen and elastin production decreases. When combined with significant weight loss, the reduction in facial fat pads can leave skin looking loose and under-supported, creating a hollowed, aged appearance even when you're feeling your best.
At-Home Skincare: Your Foundation
A good skincare routine forms the foundation of any treatment plan. I recommend products containing:
vitamin C for brightening
retinoids for collagen stimulation
hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.
A quality eye cream with peptides can help support skin structure, whilst daily SPF is non-negotiable to prevent further pigmentation and collagen breakdown.
However, skincare alone has its limits. The structural changes and volume loss that create shadows and loose skin require a more targeted approach.
In-Clinic Treatments: A Combination Approach
After more than a decade of treating periorbital concerns, I've found that combination treatments consistently deliver the most natural, long-lasting results. Here's what I typically recommend:
polynucleotides at our basingstoke clinic
Microneedling with Growth Factors stimulates your skin's natural healing response, triggering collagen production and improving skin texture and thickness. For the delicate under eye area, this helps strengthen the skin envelope without being overly aggressive.
Polynucleotides are one of my favourite additions to under eye treatment protocols. These biostimulators work at a cellular level to regenerate tissue, improve skin quality, and enhance elasticity. They're particularly effective post-weight loss when skin needs that extra support to bounce back.
Sunekos combines hyaluronic acid with amino acids to stimulate the extracellular matrix, improving both hydration and elasticity. It's brilliant for addressing fine lines and crepiness whilst adding a subtle lift to tired-looking skin.
Dermal Fillers can restore lost volume in the tear trough area, eliminating shadows that contribute to a tired appearance. This requires an experienced hand—the under eye area is unforgiving, and overfilling or poor placement can create more problems than it solves. When done correctly, fillers provide immediate, natural-looking rejuvenation.
Light Chemical Peels can address superficial pigmentation and stimulate skin renewal. I use these cautiously in the periorbital area, opting for gentler formulations that brighten without risking irritation.
Botox shouldn't be overlooked for overall eye rejuvenation. Strategic placement can soften crow's feet and provide a subtle brow lift, opening up the eye area and creating a more refreshed, youthful appearance.

Why Combination Treatments Work Best
The under eye area rarely has just one issue. Usually, there's a combination of volume loss, skin quality concerns, pigmentation, and fine lines all contributing to a tired appearance. That's why I almost always recommend a tailored combination approach rather than relying on a single treatment.
For example, a patient might benefit from tear trough filler to address hollowing, polynucleotides to improve skin quality and elasticity, and Botox to lift the brow and soften lines—all working together to create a comprehensive rejuvenation.
What to Expect
Most of these treatments require minimal downtime, though you may experience some mild swelling or bruising, particularly with fillers. Results develop gradually over weeks to months as your skin regenerates and rebuilds. Polynucleotides and Sunekos typically require a course of treatments for optimal results, whilst fillers and Botox provide more immediate improvements.
Your Personalised Treatment Plan
Every face is different, and what works beautifully for one person may not be the right approach for another. During your consultation, I'll assess your specific concerns, skin quality, facial anatomy, and aesthetic goals to create a treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.
